Letter to the Morning Star: Fighting for Members?!

It's good to see various trade union leaders saying they will be fighting for their members whoever is running the country, but perhaps they should start now. Most of the recent disputes in the oil refineries, occupations at Visteon etc were started by rank and file with the leaderships being forced to support the workers.

Big adverts in the Morning Star stating how many members you have and pleading for the government not to cut public services and please be progressive do nothing. Fighting back does.

RMT Sets The Pace - Letter Morning Star 20th Aug. 2009

It was great to see the Morning Star headline Stunning victory for Tube workers (August 19), but, as your editorial made clear, this victory only concerns the workforce covered by the RMT who were willing to fight for their terms and conditions.

Other trade unions who have sat back are now left out of this agreement.

The same scenario is taking place in the TfL side of the dispute, but unfortunately also concerns the members of the RMT in this area.

Tribute to Brother Andy Melvin R.I.P.

Andy MelvinOn Thursday 23rd July Brother Andy Melvin passed away from bronchopneumonia in Whipps Cross Hospital.

Andy was a fantastic guy, ready to help everyone and anyone. He was a long serving member of the RMT and an activist from day one.

Andy started out on the buses before joining TfL and becoming a Supervisor in the Liverpool Street Travel Information Centre.

MATS staff: Defend Your Job, Defend Your Rights

MATS, if you are a M, SM, Technical or AD grade then the OCR is coming for you. LU Employee Relations have just ripped up the protection you thought you had under annexe H of the PPP contract and you are now eligible for Compulsory Redundancy.

Whether you are an Engineer, Document controller, CAD Draftsperson, Accountant, Quantity Surveyor, Project Manager, Architect, Site Surveyor, Buyer, Technical Writer, Planner or PA you are expendable as you are, in Gerry Duffy's words, "just back-room staff".

RMT AGM: Young Members Resolutions

In February of this year, the National Young Members Conference submitted two resolutions to the AGM.

I'm pleased to announce that both resolutions were carried unanimously and that they are now union policy

WHEN I'M 64 "As the government continues to increase the age at which our members will be entitled to; or be able to afford to retire this union notes the importance of defending our members' occupational pensions from further erosion by the government and business fat cats.
