RMT Protests At Lithuanian Embassy Against Anti Gay Law Proposals

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and African LGBT Out and Proud Diamond Group protesting outside the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania - 27th Nov 2013.

The RMT is alarmed by reports of rising hostility towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights in Lithuania, and of attempts to introduce proposals to Parliament that attack the rights of Lithuania’s LGBT citizens.

We strongly oppose the proposals to:

  • ban gender reassignment
  • give legal protection to ‘criticism of homosexuality’ ie. anti-LGBT speech

RMT Motion To TUC Conference Calls For Campaign To End International Homophobia

Congress deplores the fact that being gay is illegal in 76 countries, and in 10 of these it is punishable by death or imprisonment. It is also well known that LGBT people in many more regions around the world are victims of violence, such as targeted killings, violent assaults and torture.

Congress therefore looks to the TUC to help the campaign to end discrimination against LGBT people around the world as a human rights principle generally and also to be able to respond swiftly to international events, prioritising case-by-case incidents.

Further to Decision No.CEWW, 23rd July 2013, the Equal Rights Sub-Committee submits the following report:

“That the General Secretary is instructed to raise this item with all the Regional Organisers who we have meetings with over the month of August 2013 and have a further update at the September Statutory meeting. Finally, the General Secretary to write to all other unions we share collective bargaining with and send them a copy of the policy for their consideration.

A Day of Action - Love Russia, Hate Homophobia - will be held in London on Tuesday 3 September, just two days before the G20 summit opens in St Petersburg, Russia, hosted by President Putin.

Election Of Equality Reps

That the General Secretary is instructed to all employers asking that all of the equality reps are elected and conducted by the RMT. Further the General Secretary to bring forward to the Council of Executives a training syllabus for these positions and make sure we provide enough training required and obtain relevant material from the TUC.

TOCS Promoting LGBT Champions

That the General Secretary is to ask the Regional Organisers;
1) where these positions exist,
2) the role and responsibilities of these ambassadors/champions on LGBT issues within the workplace and in the wider arena,
3) also what conflicts may arise from this with RMT elected reps.

That the name of the file be changed to “Employers Promoting LGBT Champions” and place the matter back in front of the Council of Executives by October 1st 2013.

Support For 'Gay Men Fighting Aids'

That we note the resolution from our LGBT Conference and support the important work of Gay Men Fighting AIDS. We agree to make a donation of £100. Noting that GMFA operates in England and Wales, we instruct the General Secretary to contact Gay Men’s Health in Glasgow asking for information about its work in Scotland. We agree to our Advisory Committee’s request to arrange for a deputation to meet GMFA. Further, we instruct the General Secretary to include an article in RMT News about HIV/AIDS and how it affects people of all sexualities and genders.

That the General Secretary is to obtain an article from a delegate/delegates of the LGBT Committee for the RMT News and ask other RMT LGBT members to put particular quotes together for the RMT News on Thatcher’s deplorable legacy on homophobia.
