20 Years of RMT Leadership: A Direct Challenge to the Trade Union Movement to Step Up on Afrikan Reparations

For two decades, the RMT has boldly stood where the rest of the British trade union movement has faltered. Sunday 23rd August, 2026, marks the 20th Anniversary of our Annual Reparations Conference at the Rockingham Centre in London and globally via Zoom.

Our theme this year is a direct, radical intervention: “Return the Land. Restore the Tongue. Rebuild the People.”

We are putting the soul back into the reparations conversation by remembering our ancestors as they truly were: royalty, doctors, nurses, farmers, husbands, wives, and children thriving at the pinnacle of modern civilisations. They were masters of art and science who were later called "savages" to justify the white-collar theft of our history. We see this insult live on today when Western museums claim we "don't know how to look after" our own stolen Benin Bronzes, or when we look at how our native ancestral languages were intentionally corrupted and replaced by European ones.

The industrial wealth of modern capitalism was built on this blood money, while the oppressors walked away with prestige and unearned legends. Because of this, reparations is not a symbolic gesture or a minor historical footnote; it is an issue of direct economic equity, structural restoration, and workplace justice.

Our Challenge to Sister Trade Unions: Stop Being Polite. Step Up.

The RMT has proudly held the line for 20 years, proving that transformative change happens when marginalised workers lead in a truly radical, unwatered-down space. But one union cannot carry this weight alone while others watch from the sidelines.

We are issuing a direct challenge to the wider trade union movement: It is time to step up. We don’t just want your warm words or your passive compliance. We demand your industrial power, your financial commitment, and your active solidarity.

We are calling on all sister trade unions, regional councils, and local branches to actively co-sponsor this historic event, fund delegate numbers, and bring your banners into the room. We must collectively weaponise our industrial leverage to smash the political vacuum in Westminster and force true reparatory justice onto the legislative agenda.
