Regional Council Executive elections 2010/11

Nominations for Regional Council officers and Executive members closed yesterday. Nominations received were as follows:

  • SECRETARY - Janine Booth (Stratford no.1 branch) - nominated by Neasden, Stratford no.1, Piccadilly & District West, East Ham, Hammersmith & City and TfL no.1 branches - elected unopposed
  • PRESIDENT - Vaughan Thomas (Central Line West branch) - nominated by Neasden, Central Line West, East Ham and Finsbury Park branches
  • ASSISTANT SECRETARY - Lewis Peacock (LU Engineering branch)

As LU's purse strings tighten we have noticed standards falling across the combine in regard to pigeon guano all over the place. The manager who carried out the water points survey across the combine has been tasked by the Trains Health & Safety Council to look at the worst offending areas; he is the new 'guano guy'.

Strengthening Grades Committees

organiseThis resolution, aimed at strengthening the union's grades committees in our Region, was passed unanimously by the Regional Council Annual General Meeting on 25 February.

THIS REGIONAL COUNCIL BELIEVES THAT:

1. grades committees can perform three important roles:

  • improving RMT's recruitment and organisation within the grade
  • bringing local reps and activists from different locations together for mutual support, exchange of information and ideas

RMT Demands Answers As Tube Signal Failure Leaves Late Passengers Stranded

LONDON UNDERGROUND’S biggest union has demanded an explanation from Tube bosses after a signal failure at Farringdon last night left passengers stranded without advice or help to finish their journeys.

RMT has learned that passengers on Metropolitan and Circle and Hammersmith and City trains spent up to 45 minutes between Kings Cross and Farringdon stations, missing last onward connections with other lines, and were given no help to finish their journeys.

Progress Achieved at Busworkers Meeting

A well attended meeting of the RMT London Busworkers Committee took place on Monday 8th February 2010 at the Bulstrode pub in Hounslow. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and determination among the members to move forward in the new year and build on what has been achieved so far.

Many issues were discussed and important decisions were made as to the future role and activity of the committee.

Among the decisions made were:

  • North London Convenor elected
  • South London Convenor elected
  • Action Plan for 2010 agreed

Police to Crackdown on Crime on Route 29/N29

A new police team has been drafted on to a bus route labelled as one of the most dangerous, in an attempt to crack down on drunken fights and violent scuffles. The team has been told to mainly concentrate on the 29 and N29.

The 29 and N29 bendy bus, which runs from Trafalgar Square to Wood Green, has long been notorious for reports of pickpocketing, violence, drunkenness and fare evasion. In recent years incidents have included a 19 year old being punched to the ground and needing major surgery and a 23 year old being stabbed.

Resolutions: Amendments to LTRC Standing Orders

The following amendments to the Regional Council Standing Orders, submitted by TfL no.1 branch, were all passed at the Regional Council AGM:

1) That there is a ‘timed agenda’ and if the time is ended then a request must be made through the Chair to continue talking on this item.

2) That the EC Member give their report about all matters, the RO give their report about all local issues. That there should be no duplication of items. Once both reports are given then the chair will ask for a show of hands for questions.

Demonstration in Support of Alberto Durango

On Friday 12th February 2010, a demonstration will take place from 1pm - 2pm, at 100, Liverpool Street, London, EC2M, in support of Alberto Durango, a cleaner and rep who has been harassed and is being victimised for his union activities and is suspended and facing the sack by his employer Lancaster (Rentokil).

Alberto is a good friend of London RMT Bus Workers and they are asked to attend and give their support to him. For more information please click here

Resolution: Support for Ian Page, TUSC

This regional council applauds Bob Crow and those officials and members of RMT who have pledged their personal support to the Trade Unionists and Socialist Coalition at the next general election.
