Disability in the workplace training course
Monday, 1st of October '18

RMT London Transport region is running a week-long training course for representatives and activists on Disability in the Workplace from Monday 1 until Friday 5 October in London. With our employers and workplaces presenting many barriers to disabled workers, members are increasingly calling on representatives to help them get adjustments, reasonable treatment, and even to stay in work. Union reps want and need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills not just to represent individuals but to campaign for more accessible and equal workplaces.

This course is run regularly at the union's National Education Centre in Doncaster, as has been adapted to be particularly relevant to the London Transport region. It will include:

  • views of disability
  • disability facts and figures
  • the medical and social models of disability
  • TfL, employers' policies and disabled workers
  • identifying and removing barriers to disabled workers
  • disability and the law, including reasonable adjustments
  • disabled members' rights
  • how accessible is our union?
  • auditing accessibility
  • RMT and TUC disabled workers' committee, conference and policies
  • the disabled people's movement

If you wish to attend this course, please use the attached form to register, and ask your employer to release you from work for that week. RMT's regional office is asking your employer to release you with pay, but if you can only get release without pay, then the union will refund your lost wages. RMT will also refund any travel expenses you incur, and will provide food, tea/coffee and all course materials. Once you have sent the application form to Doncaster and you have received confirmation that you have a place on the course you must the notify Stewart Cameron at s.cameron@rmt.org.uk who will request your release from your employer.

The venue will be confirmed nearer the time. It will be in London, and will be accessible.

Yours in solidarity
