What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

Another Victimisation: Demand Justice for Jayesh!

RMT General Grades Committee decision:

We note the correspondence from our Bakerloo branch. We are appalled at London Underground’s decision to downgrade our member Jayesh Patel from Train Operator to Customer Service Assistant, causing him a considerable loss of income. This is clearly a very harsh punishment considering the circumstances. This incident shows once again that London Underground treats its staff very differently from its managers, that the company is systematically persecuting RMT reps and activists, and that London Underground managers, emboldened by senior management’s anti-union stance, are out of control.

We note that Jayesh is very active in this union is several capacities - as a young member and ethnic minority member, and in his branch - and is well known to LU management for his active participation in campaigns and industrial action against other victimisations, including picketing at Queens Park depot in support of his Bakerloo Train Operator workmate Eamonn Lynch.

We note that Jayesh is appealing against this harsh and unfair treatment, and agree to the two requests made to us by the branch. We therefore instruct the General Secretary to:
• advise the branch of our support for Brother Patel’s application to Employment Tribunal
• provide legal advice and representation to Brother Patel
• write to London Underground advising that RMT is in dispute with the company about this issue

London Transport Regional Council and branches to be advised.
