United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) Review Geneva: 20 – 24th April 2009 “Call for delegation to DURBAN II”

The UN World Conference Against Racism Review process is currently taking place and a second round of preparation meetings will be held on the 6th to 17th October 2008.

The main review will be held from 20 – 24th April 2009.

In 2001 around 20,000 delegates including 3 RMT members, along with other Trade Unions and NGO (Non Government Organisation) attend the WCAR in South Afrika. DURBAN I

This very successful international conference declared Enslavement and Colonialisms as crimes against humanity and racism has been it’s by–product. The UK, and another 168 countries agreed to put in place national plans to fight racism.

The US walked out of the conference in 2001.

The US and its allies have returned to the review process called DURBAN II and is already seeking to reverse the gains made.

We instruct the RMT National Executive Committee to ensure that we have a delegation in Geneva in 2009 including members who attended DURBAN I, in order to defend the gains made in 2001, and to work in solidarity with other like minded trade unions and NGO in order to be part of a wider delegation.
