London Overground Workers Balloted For Strike As Guards Face Sack

That further to our previous decision GWW 09th july we note the report from our regional officer and the material from London Overground Rail Operations Ltd. We are appalled that this company is proceeding with scrapping Conductor Guards and contrary to the managements own briefings to employees, led by the Managing Director and Human Resources Director, intends to begin dismissals in October 2013 and complete them in February 2014 which is earlier than the dates quoted in their briefings. In line with this union’s policy, we are determined to defend this essential role and will do everything within our powers to achieve this.

We instruct the General Secretary to immediately ballot our Conductor Guard members for strikes and action short of strike, and to send a personal letter by post to all members involved, strongly urging them to vote Yes to both questions. Further we instruct the General Secretary to ensure that the matrix is fully prepared for all grades with LOROL in order that we may escalate the industrial action if and when necessary.

We further note:

  • the Early Day Motion on this issue, and instruct the General Secretary to email all our members urging them to contact their MP urging him/her to sign it.
  • the resolution of support passed, and the press release issued by, Hackney Trades Union Council in support of our fight, and instruct the General Secretary to circulate these to branches, encouraging them to raise the issue similarly with their local Trades Council(s).

Regional Councils and branches to be advised.
