London Underground's guidance on attendance during adverse weather conditions

This is London Underground's guidance on attendance during adverse weather conditions, issued on 17 December 2009. It is posted here for your information, not because RMT agrees with it!

=====

Guidance for attendance for all staff in London Underground following adverse weather conditions.

• Employees are required to make every effort to get to their place of work and must use (and be encouraged to use) every reasonable means to achieve this objective. It is their responsibility to get to work.

• Where travel to their normal location is not possible, employees should report to an alternative LU location. Operational/ Maintenance Staff should report to their nearest Underground Station / Depot and inform both their normal Manager and Duty Manager on site. If onward travel to the normal (or more suitable) locations remains impracticable they should be given productive work to do wherever possible.
• Managers should ensure that meaningful work is undertaken if the individual is unable to get to their normal location, otherwise a day’s leave must be taken.
• Staff who are unable to get to work at all should bear in mind that it is only in exceptional circumstances that they will not be required to take annual/compensatory leave for the day concerned. Alternatively, they may ask for special leave unpaid if they do not wish to use up annual leave.
• Managers should be flexible in relation to annual leave in the event of serious weather conditions that have prevented attendance, and in dealing with lateness that results from such conditions.
• Absence resulting from additional childcare/ dependents issues as a consequence of serious weather conditions is managed using the existing family/dependents leave provisions.

In all circumstances managers should satisfy themselves that employees have made every effort to attend work. A common sense approach should apply and these guidelines should be interpreted according to each individual circumstance.
