Messages of support for our action against Tube job cuts

I had a terrible journey today [Tuesday 7 Sept!] but nothing compared to how it would be every day with the cuts promised. And certainly nothing to how you guys are being treated.
You have this commuter's support. Keep up the fight!
Sean Robinson

An email of wholehearted support to everyone trying striking in defence of services, safety and jobs.
Thanks for the leaflet today which I picked up outside Camden (I walked to work from Finsbury Park in order to give a bit of support of my own). I will contact my member of the GLA and write to TFL and email Mayor Boris Johnson.
Best wishes to Mr Bob Crow and everyone supporting the strike.
Alison Cushing

Dear Union members
I was very pleased to talk this morning to members of the union on strike. As a regular user of London Underground I fully appreciate the concerns of the union about safety and staffing cuts. Travel would be much affected by lack of staff on every level and would leave many of us seeking alternative forms of transport or even changing work patterns, all of which would be detrimental, not only to our quality of life, but to the economy which this government says it is keen to put to rights. I might also add that my own daughter was so nearly caught up on that fateful day of the bombing but was advised by the staff to go home and that the presence of staff in the stations is essential to safety but also makes travel on the underground so much more endurable.
Best of luck in your negotiations. I will certainly voice my concerns to the relevant bodies and would appreciate being kept informed of any other ways the public can help.
Kathy Adams

Hi there,
I'm not in London today so couldn't come down to a picket line to show mysolidarity, but just wanted to say best of luck to all striking RMT members today and over the coming weeks.
As a regular tube user I fully support the staff in their struggle against these crazy job cuts. None of us want to feel unsafe in our own tube stations, nor see a return to the station fires of the 70s and 80s.
RMT should do everything in its power to publicly illustrate the relation between this dispute and the looming breath-taking cuts to the public sector. Both are clear examples of private pockets filling with public money stolen from ordinary workers.
In solidarity,
Greg Brown

Hope you all get good result. Make sure you keep the Bastards honest.

I would like to say that I fully support the RMT and many of my friends who are not active in the left do so to. I agree with every strike that the RMT does, were it not for such a militant union you would not have the pay and conditions that you do today and it is an example to us all. The propaganda surrounding the dispute is utterly disgraceful and as a regular user of the tube who lives outside london I know that much of the tube's problems are due to staffing problems, so cutting a further 800 jobs is utter madness.
Up the RMT !!!!
Rachael Horwitz, Socialist Party

All the best to the RMT strikers. We are both tube users and support you and your cause wholeheartedly. Up the workers - power to the union (see you tube billy bragg video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88vZD4Dd_Jo)
Jodie Ward & Catherine Wardle, Librarians and UNISON

Enjoyed picketting with my brothers and sisters in RMT. Let's make the next one even better and co-ordinate together.
Neeta Patel, Branch Secretary, TSSA Underground no.1

Just to say all power to you in your fight!
Good luck, you are showing the labour movement the kind of backbone it needs to beat the continuing attacks on working people in fighting for decent working conditions, as well as proper safety for all that use the tube.
Ignore the cynics and backbiters, your fight is just and principled and we need more like you!
All the best
Michael Gardiner, LSHTM / UCU rep

As a regular tube passenger, I fully support you!
Amy Kenyon

Solidarity and full support for your struggle from PCS DWP Sheffield Branch.
The Branch Executive Committee here (on behalf of the members) supports your right and need to take action over the huge threats currently proposed by the LU management. In any job dealing with the general public safety is paramount, and the proposed job cuts would leave both passengers and staff in a very vulnerable position. We believe that retaining these jobs is vital to the safety and smooth running of the LU services, and fully support your right to take action.
The whitewashing by LU that has been taken up by the general media - that this is an issue of technology replacing jobs - is a small and crude part of the issue. We recognise that Tube staff are more valuable than just as ticket collectors, and their role in the safety and security of the Tube network cannot be underestimated.
As part of supporting you we will be publicising your campaign via our own branch communications with members.
Stand strong.
Branch Executive Committee, PCS DWP Sheffield Branch (1000 members, Jobcentre Plus/Pensions service in Sheffield)

London Tube strike is about safety and jobs. The RMT and TSSA members have shown great solidarity and responsibility - under staffed stations are a danger to all. The last thing we need is worse public transport and more unemployment.
Jeremy Corbyn MP

Barnet trades council (TUC) wishes you the best of luck with your strike this week and with your fight to save your jobs and defend the level of service to the public. We have several ticket offices in Barnet that could see reduced opening due to the proposed staff cuts. For that reason alone we would support you.
We also have our own important trade union struggles - in the PCS, in Barnet council and schools, etc. We know how important it is for trade unionists to support each other.
We are informing our members and contacts about your picket lines, and hopefully we will be seeing you there in the next few days.
Vicki Morris, on behalf of Barnet trades council

Not all tube users are as jam-today stupid as the papers would have you believe. I'd rather have a safer tube with good station staffing tomorrow even if it means getting the bus today. Good luck!
James Ross

Best of luck in your fight to save jobs and defend the health and safety of Tube users
Philip Lewis, Vice chair, Camden Unison

Travellers on London Underground certainly do not want job cuts, that would lead to reduced safety levels and reduced morale amongst staff. We respect the judgement of the workers delivering the services.
Janet Shapiro, Retired UCU

Just to say that there are Tube users who support you in your dispute.
Oisin Gilmore

Tube stations need staff at all times for passenger safety and help. Despite excellent tube maps the network can still be confusing to visitors and even to a native like me. (Never board a northbound Northen line train at Euston - the signage is impossible). At quiet times being alone is worrying; just seeing a staff member at the other end of the platform is a comfort.
Keep up the good work. Keep our train network safe and pleasant.
Rosalind Levy, GMB

Good luck with your strike, brave members of RMT! I hope your struggle inspires the whole movement so we can take the workers' fight from underground to the streets and all the way into the skies!
Gilaine Young, Branch Organiser, PCS NATS Heathrow

Solidarity brothers and sisters! It's only with a fight like yours that we can build working-class confidence, power and resistance to these ideological cuts! We've got a lot to do to get the public to not accept 'austerity' and to fight, and that means explaining how the impact on the Tube all the way through to social care workers' sick pay being axed have the same root. It requires unity and action - good luck!
Max Munday, Unite Shop Steward for Turning Point services in Yorkshire

Congratulations on getting some action organised - don't let them get away with this. People's safety is at stake here. More important than profit or balancing financial chequebooks I think.
Good luck!
Mike Hill, Westminster UNISON, Health & Safety Officer

At a meeting of 20+ people of the anti-cuts campaign in Brent last night it was agreed we should support the tube workers as part of the fight back against the attack on public spending and jobs, and also for health and safety reasons. People are being encouraged to show support at picket lines.
All the best.
Pete Firmin, President, Brent Trades Union Council

Good luck with your fight.
Stephen Miller, Box Office staff (BECTU)

Best of luck. Make management wish they'd not come up with this idea in the first place.
Cliver Walder, CWU Assistant Secretary, Birmingham, Black Country and Worcester

All the best with winning this dispute. It's good to know that the RMT is protecting our safety.
Sandra Griffiths, UCU

I support the RMT members' in their struggle to maintain public services.
Solidarity!
Christine McCabe, volunteer driver for blind people

Solidarity with RMT members, your struggle is all workers' struggle.
Graham Askew, retired

I fully support the tube unions in their campaign to keep jobs on the Underground. Cuts will be detrimental to safety.
Stuart Watkin, Tooting Labour Party GC & Unite member (personal capacity)

As an exRMT member I know that London Underground workers have always stood up for their rights in the face of an unscrupulous mangement along with Mayoral and Government sniping. I imagine that this fight will be no different, apart from the change in Govenment. Keep up the fight, it is important for the safety of the travelling public and your fellow workers that you win. I wish you all the very best.
Dougie Kinnear

Solidarity and best wishes in your current dispute brothers and sisters.
Matthew Thompson, Public and Commercial Services Union, Associate and Retired Members Section

Never mind what the bosses' press says! We know what you're doing is right.
Solidarity!
Tom Dale, GMB

All of us at the Morning Star are with you 100%. Keep up the fight and we will tell the world the truth about the cuts in our transport system. Victory is certain.
Ivan Beavis, Unite Chapel at the Morning Star
