RMT Brings Debate On Economy, Workers’ Rights, Defending Public Transport And Social Dumping To TUC Congress

TRANSPORT UNION RMT will be taking a range of motions and amendments to the TUC Congress in London next week aimed at stepping up the union fight to defend jobs, services and workers rights:

  • A motion on defending public transport that looks to build a mass campaign of national resistance to the McNulty Review rail reforms which would savage jobs and ticket offices while jacking up fares and the profits from privatisation.
  • Opposition to a proposed EU/Indian Free Trade Agreement with “Mode 4” provisions which would allow companies to bring in Indian workers on very low rates of pay - driving down wages and working conditions and dumping workers in Britain on the dole.
  • Fighting back against a concerted campaign from the bosses organisations and the Tory right to bring in new anti-union laws setting up a different from of “democracy” in ballots for the working class compared to those enjoyed by the political class.
  • Demanding the renationalisation of transport, energy water and telecoms and the scrapping of Trident.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“The TUC meets this year with the economy on the brink of a double dip recession and with the full impact of the ConDem austerity cuts only just beginning to be felt. While boardroom pay and bonuses are rocketing workers are being threatened with the biggest assault on living conditions since the end of war time rationing.”

“The only defence that working people have, as the gap between rich and poor widens to unprecedented levels in modern times, is their collective strength through trade unions. Next week we set out the next stages in the fight back.”
