RMT to strike on polling day on London Underground over victimisation and sacking of trade union rep Gary Carney

TUBE UNION RMT confirmed today that it has called a strike on the Central Line on May 6th over the victimisation and sacking of long-standing activist Gary Carney.

Members have already delivered a solid yes vote for strike action in this dispute over the unjustified dismissal of Brother Carney, an RMT Representative who has twenty-years unblemished service with the company.

RMT's Train Operator Representatives and Lead Officer have met to discuss the situation and to make recommendations. The union case confirms that Brother Carney was not avoiding a Drug & Alcohol Test and the manager who referred Gary for a disciplinary investigation made a specific issue of Brother Carney being a trade union representative pointing to a deliberate fit up.

The consensus from RMT reps was that strike action should be called on the Central Line on 6th May 2021. Gary has been the victim of a grave injustice and strike action was considered the best chance of securing his reinstatement.

The National Executive Committee has considered this matter and taken the decision to call on all Train Operators, Night Tube Train Operators and Instructor Operators at Leytonstone, Loughton, West Ruislip & White City Traincrew Depots to take strike action by not booking on for any shifts that commence between: -

• 21:00 hours on Wednesday 5th May 2021 and 20:59 hours on Thursday 6th May 2021

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

“The sacking of Gary Carney is a blatant case of victimisation for trade union activities and his colleagues have made it clear that they stand shoulder to shoulder with him in this fight for justice.

“RMT will have no hesitation in escalating this dispute if LU don't right this wrong.

“The Union remains available for further talks with the Company and I will of course keep you advised of all further developments.‎”
