RMT Launches New Drive For Nationalisation

20 years after legislation paving the way for the privatisation of Britain’s railways was passed by John Major’s Tory Government on the 19th January 1993, rail union RMT has set out the case for public ownership with a pledge to step up the campaign for renationalisation:

  • Privatisation has cost passengers more. Since 1995 the average ticket price has increased by 22% in real terms. Britain has Europe’s highest commuter fares for both day returns and season tickets.

We have been used. We have been abused. We have been refused
We will not be ignored and we will not go away.
The evidence is absolutely clear.
There is no reasonable explanation for LUL not to give the 33 RMT workers sacked a job.
A job they have been doing for 5 years.
Now LUL will spend in excess of £333,000 to replace 33 workers on the Bakerloo and District lines.
Its the economics of the madhouse.
Sack the agency not the workers. Justice for the 33.

Tube bosses are sabotaging Bakerloo Line service and misinforming passengers

United action by ASLEF and RMT drivers for safety on the Bakerloo Line has been rock solid and has hit LU hard. So much so, that LU are not allowing the control room to manage the service in the best interest of passengers or the service. A diktat from senior LU bosses has stated that a ‘special service’ is not to be implemented and management have been placed in the control room to ensure that control room staff abide by this. They are intentionally out to sabotage the best running of the trains to make drivers suffer.

Message Of Support To Transport Workers Union

The Transport Worker's Union New York chapter - 'Local 100' - which primarily represents members in New York's subway system, has advised members to enter stations at caution speed. The TWU explain that their have been 150 'one-unders' - or 12-9's, an average of three per week, none of which have been the fault of the train driver. By entering the station at caution speed the union believes lives can be saved and drivers spared the trauma of being involved in an incident.

Trainpeople Workers Open Soup Kitchen

33 RMT London Underground “Trainpeople” staff – who face the prospect of dismissal this week - took their demo right to the heart of the company that treated them so appallingly today.

The sacked workers and their supporters were at St James Park station on Tuesday 15th January at 8am where they set up a soup kitchen to highlight their plight and build public and political support for their fight for jobs and justice.

Some Improvement In Industrial Relations At Revenue Control

We note the report from our Regional Organiser attaching responses from our representatives. We welcome the news that the situation is improving and issues are being addressed, but having discussed the matter with our representatives, we are disappointed that some problems continue.

We instruct the General Secretary to continue to monitor the situation, to seek regular reports from our representatives, and to ensure that our revenue control members are kept informed.

London Transport Regional Council, branches and Revenue Control representatives to be advised.

Your Right To Be Paid Annual Leave During Sickness

In my circular No NP/185/12 dated 10th August 2012 (Sick Workers and Annual Leave Ref: LA/185/12) I set out members’ entitlement to receive payment or carry over their leave entitlement where they had been unable to take this due to illness.

This was as a result of the decision of the Court of Appeal that, regardless of whether a worker is employed by a public or private employer, if a worker is unable or unwilling to take the four weeks’ annual leave conferred by regulation 13 of the Working Time Regulations owing to sickness (i) he or she must be allowed to take it at another time
