RMT Rejects Five Year Tube Pay Offer and Launches Campaign For a Substantial Increase

TUBE UNION RMT confirmed today that it has rejected a proposed five year pay offer from TFL and is launching a campaign for a substantial, above-inflation one year deal that reflects the additional workload placed on staff as a result of the repeated breakdown in services, a large increase in passenger numbers and the knock on effect from a programme of staff reductions.

Young Members Events: Durham Miners' Gala & Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival

The Durham Miners' Gala and the Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival are tow important events in the unions calendar. Both take place in July, and this year, for the first time, the RMT has organised activities specifically for young members at both. Dave Marshall of the RMT Organising Unit says that these activities will be "combining education sessions with going along to and enjoying the events themselves."

The Durham Miners' Gala is from the evening of 7th July to the 11th. The Tolpuddle Festival is the following weekend from the evening of the 15th of July to the 17th.

Attached are RMT circulars and application forms for both events.

RMT Calls For Direct Talks After 24 Hours Of Tube Hell And Demands End To Job And Maintenance Cuts

Tube union RMT today called for direct talks between the Mayor, unions and passenger groups, and demanded an immediate halt to tube jobs and maintenance cuts, after what the union described as “24 hours of tube hell.”

On Tuesday night the Jubilee Line was plunged into chaos through a combination of a power shutdown and faulty rolling stock and operating systems leaving over 1700 passengers to be detrained and walked through sweltering tube tunnels with the assistance of station staff. By Wednesday morning, the Jubilee Line was still in total disarray.

Stopping Victimisations: Spreading the Word

RMT GGC decision:

That we note the resolution from our Bakerloo branch and support its sentiments. We therefore instruct the General Secretary to immediately write to all TUC-affiliated trade unions, asking whether they plan to hold any industrial action in London or the surrounding areas during May or June, and inviting them to discuss with us the possibilities of co-ordinating that industrial action with any strike action we call in pursuance of this dispute.

Revised Decision: Ballot for Action on Hammersmith & City Line

That we note the report from our Regional Organiser on this matter. In accordance with the branch's revised wishes, we rescind our previous decision on this matter. We instruct the General Secretary to ballot our driver members at Hammersmith depot for strikes and action short of strikes, and to ballot our driver members at Edgware Road and Barking (H&C) depots for action short of strikes.

We instruct the General Secretary to send a letter by post to all members being balloted, explaining the issue and the case for voting for industrial action.

Power Control Room dispute: update

RMT General Grades Committee decision:

That we note that discussions with London Underground regarding Power Control Room grade progression are continuing. We note that while the company has agreed to most of our demands, it intends to implement its offer over a three-year period. We see no reason why our members should wait three years for an improved grade progression deal.

We therefore instruct the General Secretary to request an agreement from London Underground to extend the 28-day deadline for the calling of industrial action.
