Workers United Against Racism

The London Olympics was a resounding success thanks to the role of different sections of workers who delivered the Games.

London Underground staff worked around the clock to provide an excellent service for the million extra passengers a day. People from all over the world, able bodied and disabled, expressed their delight that stations were staffed by knowledgeable staff. Behind the scenes our engineers and service controllers kept the service running like clockwork while our drivers delivered passengers swiftly and safely to their destinations.

We note the correspondence from the company, and instruct the General Secretary to obtain the views of our Level 2 representatives and place these in front of us.

We welcome the resolution from our East Ham branch and share its concerns about the treatment of
our representative.

We instruct the General Secretary to ensure that Brother Watson received the full support of this union,
and to obtain a detailed report on the progress of the case.

We further instruct the General Secretary to ensure that LUL’s current review of its bullying and
harassment procedure considers lessons that can be learned from this case before the new procedure is
agreed at Company Council.

We note the resolutions from our London Transport Regional Council, and reiterate this union's complete opposition to driverless trains.

The main request of these resolutions – to ballot our test train and potentially other, drivers for industrial action – was dealt with by our decision of 25 September in response to a resolution from our LU Fleet branch.

We note the resolution from our London Transport Regional Council and share its opposition to the English Defence League (EDL) and its concern over London Underground’s apparent assistance to EDL demonstrators.

We refer this matter to our Political, Transport Policy and Liberation Sub-committee for examination and report.

As the largest trade union on London Underground, and the only union representing all grades on London Underground, RMT deeply regrets that no action has been taken following the GLA investigation into the state of the Tube.

In particular, RMT is deeply concerned that following the Union’s active engagement in the investigation, and the subsequent good faith with which we engaged the Olympics, that it now appears that our members are faced with an unprecedented assault.

We note the research information on file, and the views expressed by our representatives at our meeting on Monday 8 October. We instruct the General Secretary to publicise this information to members, in particular RMT’s recent submission to the GLA and our raising of this issue in Parliament through a question and Early Day Motion. We ask members to lobby their MPs to support this EDM.

We note the views expressed by our representatives at our meeting on 8 October, and reaffirm the following industrial action, instructing our Victoria line driver members to:

1. NOT to recognise the imposed sensitive edge door procedure and to work the previous safer instruction. i.e. go back to the carriage concerned and physically check the cause of activation.
2. NOT to sign for the new Defective In Service Instruction (D.I.S.I.) handbook and not to recognise this as a condition of service and to work to the previous D.I.S.I. book.
   

We note the views expressed by our representatives held on Monday 8 October.

We therefore reaffirm our industrial action, and instruct the General Secretary to ensure:

1. a renewed effort to promote and explain the action to drivers.
2. regular updates from reps on developments.
3. an up-to-date list of platforms with disputed categorisation is produced.
4. our stations representatives produce publicity material for station staff, especially supervisors, on this issue and the union’s stance on it.
