RMT concerned over fixed term contracts on Piccadilly Line

FIXED TERM CONTRACTS, WORKSHOP STAFF, PICCADILLY LINE – LONDON UNDERGROUND (LUL/13/2)

At a recent meeting with Tube Lines, the Company announced its intention to recruit 35 new staff to work in workshops on the Piccadilly Line on a 2 year fixed term contract. The work is necessary to enable 24-hour lifting of the trains to replace damaged wheels due to problems with rail head contamination (leaf fall) and wheel flats on the line.

RMT Reps raised concerns at the meeting regarding undermining the core work of the current workshop staff and the possible impact on any future redundancy situation. The clear position from our Reps is that any new staff should be employed by the Company on a permanent basis.

This matter has been considered by the National Executive Committee, which has noted a report from the Lead Officer and awaits further developments.
