'RMT London Calling', January 2011 (second issue): Defend Trade Union Rights!

The new issue of our 'RMT London Calling' newsletter urges members to defend trade union rights against anti-union laws and dismissals of RMT reps. It also gives a detailed update about our ongoing campaign against London Underground job cuts, and advertises RMT's coach to the anti-EDL protest in Luton on Saturday 5 February.

Update: London Underground Job Cuts

New Stations Rosters - Minus Jobs!

London Underground’s new stations rosters - minus hundreds of jobs - are due to come in on 6 February. Staff will be expected to work even more anti-social hours with staffing levels so low that stations will struggle to cope. Ticket offices will be open for significantly shorter hours, causing huge extra workload for staff in the ticket hall and elsewhere around the station - and yet, despite LU’s claims, their numbers are being cut too.

Join our Olympics Sub-Committee!

RMT London Transport Regional Council has decided to set up an Olympics sub-committee. The purpose of this is to highlight the issues facing our members during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, monitor the various employers’ plans, and campaign for a decent bonus and to prevent the introduction of casualised forms of working.

Resolution: Fare Rises

This resolution, submitted by Camden 3 branch and seconded by Finsbury Park branch, was carried unanimously by the January 2011 Regional Council meeting:

This Regional Council believes the RMT should make the most of public anger around:

  • extortionate January fare rises (some prices doubled, others up 18%)
  • Oyster cards now £5
  • Abolishing intermediate zones travelcards

The campaign organised by the union should include: public leafletting, press releases, freedom of information requests on where Oyster incomplete journey charges go to, and investigating possible legal avenues for staff and passengers to pursue.
